The human mouth is an incredible creation, it can also be known as the human cavity but the word mouth is commonly used as a description for it. It consist of many different parts such as both the upper and lower jaw, teeth and gums, the tongue and lets not forget the saliva glands. Many people assume that the mouth is just for eating purposes, chewing, swallowing and mixing food up, however this is not the case. It is used in the process of talking as well. It helps pronounce words and also enables an individual to express how they are feeling and do things such as whistling and kissing. Our mouths do so much without us often realising. We must take good care of our mouths, especially our teeth. Regular brushing is needed to maintain good oral hygiene and to stop any nasty things occurring. We should brush our teeth at least twice a day and also include regular flossing within our programme.

This is to keep our teeth clean and healthy along with our gums and the rest of our mouth. We should also attend a dentist regularly so that if there are any problems then they can either fix them or advise on the plan of action to take towards a healthier happier mouth. Despite our efforts to keep our mouths clean, bacteria will always develop in our mouths. There is a condition called gingivitis which affects the gums and teeth of an individual. This condition can be described as the inflammation of the gums, however this can unfortunately lead to more severe problems, and these are things like periodontal disease which is a more severe case of gingivitis as it attacks the gums, then through to the jaw bone, this results in the loss of teeth. If you suspect you are suffering from gingivitis the symptoms you may experience are things like swollen, bleeding gums that are sensitive to touch.

They may have a bright red or even a purple look about them and you may encounter some mouth sores. This condition is caused by a backlog and build up of bacteria irritating the place it has targeted. If left untreated and for example if the gingivitis progressed and got worse then it could lead to tooth loss, a gum infection, gum abscesses, trench mouth, and even jaw abscesses. Treating and preventing gingivitis is relatively easy. It is recommended that an individual should brush their teeth at least twice a day along with flossing and brushing your cheeks and tongue and using a mouth wash. In general it is not very common for gingivitis to affect any form of insurance application such as Critical Illness Cover.

You will need to disclose it if it has occurred within approximately 5 years of the application date however it shouldn’t be a concern. It may be difficult for some of us to brush your teeth twice a day due to other commitments, however you can use a mouth wash or even chewing can often neutralise some of the acidity in you mouth.
